Cartel Killing

by on September 15, 2011

Stemming from our discussion in class last Tuesday, I came across this article:

Living in America, we love to believe that we will stand up against the government and risk lives to print a story, article, blog, piece, or more boldly, the truth. However, in other parts of the country, our freedoms do not ring. The article reads:

A woman was hogtied and disemboweled, her intestines protruding from three deep cuts on her abdomen. Attackers left her topless, dangling by her feet and hands from a bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. A bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder severed so deeply the bone was visible. (Castillo 1)

Unlike other parts of the world effected by blatant corruption, we seemingly preach our freedoms by our semi-restricted press. But, little do we forget the suppressing government of other countries and the danger of choosing to publish something to reveal the truth. I cannot decide whether or not it was worth it. This young couple made the choice to blog the truth and their own lives became the target, not their words.

Is it worth it?
