The release of Newtown 911 tapes

by on December 6, 2013

Recently, the Newtown 911 one tapes have been released to news orginizations. The question here is should they be broadcasted and if so, how? Reading through articles, many state that the media outlets have a difficult decision to make and I agree. Personally, as a member of the public, I do not find the need to hear these tapes. It has been almost a year since the tragedy and broadcasting these tapes will not change what happened.  If I want to know about them, I will read the articles that mention the bits of the tapes. As a journalist, I would possibly want to listen to them so I could accurately credit those would responded to the tragedy. I would not broadcast it on TV, radio or online because like MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow said, this would create “additional, pointless trauma” for the people of Newtown. But should these tapes have even been released to news organizations in the first place? What would the ethical approach be?
