Who is a journalist?

by on February 5, 2014

The best place to start our blog is by first defining who a journalist is.   The approach of professions being able to assert titles for themselves and exclude others does not quite fit the field of journalism.  It is not applicable to journalism because there is no existing standardized exam one must take to qualify them as journalists, like lawyers or doctors have to  pass exams to legally practice within their respected field.  Most working journalists today did not even major in journalism, but are recognized as journalist.  So, what makes one a journalist?

Please also take a second to read Who is a “journalist?” , a perspective on the importance of defining who a journalist is in Journalism ethics.  Do you agree with the author?
