Airing the last words of two fallen Boston Fire Fighters. Ethical or not?

by on March 30, 2014

Last weeks Back Bay fire claimed the lives of two Boston Fire Fighters. This was obviously a huge news story in the region, and as such, has been covered extensively. Of interest to me is the decision to broadcast the final recorded words of the fallen firefighters. Was it insensitive to the families? Did the media publicize the recordings as quickly as they did? Did the recordings ad anything to the story that could otherwise not be made clear with photo or video footage alone? Linked to this post is a roundtable talk on the WGBH program, Beat the Press, that can be found here.
